Site stuff Ratings

I was driving around this weekend, and thinking about the “X stars” system of ratings albums/movies/etc. I wasn’t pleased with it, as I feel the whole giving numbers to these things is pretty arbitrary. Why not give something more concrete? I was thinking it would be way more useful to tell people whether or not, in no uncertain terms, the album is worth buying, downloading, etc. However you choose to get it, is it worth it. So I’m going to move away from the stars/numerical rating system.

So…you’ve decided to go to a “Pass/Fail” grading system eh?

Maybe instead you should develop your own 5-level scale:

“This album was so bad it made me long for the cold embrace of death”

“This album annoys me slightly but others may like it.”

“All in all, I have no strong feelings about this album at all.”

“This album is pretty good but it doesn’t turn me on.”

“This album gives me a boner.”

I was thinking something more than a binary rating system. Like I said, buy, download, stream, avoid, etc. Essentially rating how much effort you should be willing to put into this album.

I guess I’m just fed up with numeric scales that don’t really tell you anything. Of course, ideally one would read the review and be able to judge whether or not the album would be worthwhile to them, and not need the rating.

I started out thinking I’d do ratings, but it doesn’t really make sense for hobbyists like us. It makes sense for pros to rate because they have to see/read/listen to everything they’re assigned – but for me, I only watch stuff I think I’m going to like in the first place, and then I’m only moved to write about things that I LOVE or DON’T – so the ratings wouldn’t really make sense or be useful.

But that is an excellent point.
